External Funding Opportunities

National Institute for Health Research (England & Wales) calls that may be of interest to investigators working in tobacco control include:

  • NIHR Programme Grants for Applied Research: Awards of up to £5 million are available over 3-5 years to investigators who can demonstrate an impressive record of achievement in applied research.
  • NIHR Public Health Research Programme: Funds are available to evaluate public health interventions and to provide knowledge on the impacts of non-NHS interventions designed to improve health.
  • NIHR Research for Patient Benefit: This is a scheme for regionally commissioned research. Up to £250,000 is available for projects of up to 36 months duration.
  • NIHR Health Services Research Programme: This will fund single large studies of national or international importance (between £100 000 and £2 million). Calls not yet announced but expressions of interest may be made.
  • NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme: Recent call for outline proposals includes nicotine replacement therapy pre-loading, among other topics.
