Smoking Cessation Research

Exploring the best and most effective ways of providing stop smoking services and assisting people to quit.

One of UKCTCS’s main areas of research is into smoking cessation, developing the evidence base for methods of supporting and treating people in their attempts to quit.

The health risks of cigarettes are largely documented, and, together with the addictive properties of smoking, there is clearly a need to assist current smokers to stop. UKCTCS drives a portfolio of research into effective methods of helping smokers give up tobacco. These methods include:

  • Cessation (stop smoking) services, such as helplines and dedicated face to face counselling, that offer assistance and support to tobacco users wishing to quit.
  • Educational material such as pamphlets and publications warning tobacco users of the associated health risks
  • Nicotine Replacement therapy (NRT) and pharmaceutical products

Cessation research also includes evaluation of existing support provided to smokers.
