Professor David Greenaway took up office as the sixth Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham in  2008. He was appointed to the University as a Professor of Economics in 1987 and was previously a Dean, a Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and founding Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy. He is a Member of the Government's Asia Task Force and a Deputy Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire. In 2012, Professor Greenaway was made an Honorary Citizen of the City of Ningbo in China. He is currently leading 'Shape of Training', a national review of the training and professional development of Doctors in the UK, being coordinated by the General Medical Council.

Previous roles

Professor Greenaway's previous public service roles include:

  • Chairman and member of the Armed Forces Pay Review Body (1998-2010)
  • Member of the Senior Salaries Review Body (2004-2010)
  • Advisor to the Department for Transport on uninsured driving (2003-2004)
  • Chair of the Economics and Econometrics Panel for the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2001 and 2008 and Vice-Chair for the 1996 RAE
  • Member of the Council of the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) (1998-2002)
  • Non-Executive Director of the Nottingham Health Authority and Queens Medical Centre Hospital Trust
  • Consultant to the World Bank, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Commission, the United Nations, World Trade Organization, and HM Treasury

He is Editor of The World Economy and his research is published in the Journal of International Economics , Journal of Development Economics, Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Economic Inquiry, Economics Letters, Review of International Economics, Canadian Journal of Economics, and World Development.

Life Cycle

In 2011, the Vice-Chancellor cycled 1,030 miles from John O'Groats to Land's End. He and his team raised £232,000 for research on palliative and end of life care.

In 2012, he cycled 1,087 miles from Cape Wrath to Dover to raise funds to help improve access to further and higher education for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.  Life Cycle 2 raised £258,000.

In August 2013, he led a team of 11 to take on the most challenging ride yet: 1,100+ miles covering the capital cities of the UK and Republic of Ireland to raise funds for Stroke Rehabilitation Research.  The challenge ended on September 1st with a Community Day on University Park.  Life Cycle 3 has raised £265,000 so far.

The Vice-Chancellor continues to lecture on a Year One ‘Current Economic Issues’ undergraduate module in The School of Economics.
